Hi Elizabeth, I substituted butter buds for the butter called for in the recipe. I use it whenever the original recipe calls for melted butter. In this case it was used to make a thickener. If it calls for butter or oil for browning veggies, I use balsamic vinegar almost always. Joan ------------------------------
