Rumor: Brad Pitt in the Running for Thor?

Rumor: Brad Pitt in the Running for Thor?

As much as I don't like posting rumors, the overwhelming response to Matthew McConaughey as Captain America has convinced me that it might be "fun" to run this one, too. I'm pretty sure I don't believe this rumor for a second, like Marvel is just teasing us for the sake of building up some early buzz, but then again, who really knows? Our amigos over at Latino Review are reporting that Brad Pitt is one of the big names in the running for the role of Thor. No contracts have been signed, but it seems Marvel has their eyes set on Pitt as the hammer wielding Norse god of thunder.

New Photos From Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York

New Photos From Synecdoche, New York

We have only ever mentioned Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York once before - and that was to introduce one of the first photos from the film. Now we have a few more new photos and it's worth mentioning again. The film is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this month and has slowly been building buzz. Kaufman is an Oscar winning screenwriter who is making his directorial debut with Synecdoche. The concept is just as wacky of any of his previous fares, like Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but has the potential to yet again be something much more grand.

Sunday Discussion: How Spoiled Do You Want to Be?

The Dark Knight

Over the last few days I've received countless e-mails from people sending in the alleged Harvey Dent / Two Face photo from The Dark Knight that is supposedly official. Yes, I've seen it, yes I know what it looks like, but no, I am not going to post it. Why? Because I prefer to keep not only myself, but all of you, as spoiler free as possible. But thankfully these submissions have allowed me to pose this question today - how spoiled do you want to be? I prefer, as an avid moviegoer myself, to remain as spoiler free as possible simply because I believe the experience is enhanced when going in to see a movie with as little knowledge as possible. However, it seems that some of our readers really prefer to see or hear every last juicy spoiler from a movie themselves. What gives?

Let The X-Files: I Want to Believe Hype Begin!

The X-Files: I Want to Believe

The first of many viral marketing videos for the upcoming X-Files: I Want to Believe have been discovered. These two very short videos show both Mulder and Scully being interviewed individually about what they miss about each other. The first trailer will officially arrive online at midnight tonight, but until then, these videos will be the first to kick off the hype for this sequel. Almost everyone is currently focused on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but I know plenty of hardcore fans will always keep X-Files: I Want to Believe in the back of their mind. Once the trailer hits tomorrow, I'm sure the hype will really start to boil over. Mulder and Scully are back!

Ken's Review: Speed Racer - A Wonderful Experience of Visual Overload

Ken's Review: Speed Racer - A Wonderful Experience of Visual Overload

When I first heard that the Wachowski Brothers were directing Speed Racer, I was extremely disappointed. Unlike most people, I loved all of the Matrix films and I desperately wanted to see them make more movies along those same lines. The best way to describe it is like when your favorite band releases the most amazing album, then after waiting a year to hear their next one, hoping it will be even better, they decide to totally change their sound and it sucks. That is what I thought would happen with Speed Racer. Thankfully the Wachowskis didn't exactly change their style and their newest work turned out to be quite good.

Will Smith's Hancock Doing Late Reshoots

Hancock

My good friend Peter over at SlashFilm was just sent a new photo from the set of Hancock. That's old news, right? Nope - it was taken in Times Square yesterday night. How is that possible when the movie comes out in about a month? Apparently Hancock was doing very late reshoots in New York City yesterday, most likely as a result of the ratings troubles they've encountered that were detailed in this chat with director Peter Berg. Good news? Bad news? Neither really, but definitely interesting and worth noting. I think my interest in Hancock is definitely starting to increase the more I hear about it.

Kevin Smith Updates Zack and Miri Make a Porno Details

Kevin Smith Updates Zack and Miri Make a Porno Details

In addition to a new photo from the movie (seen below), Kevin Smith wrote a blog update recently and included a few more details about Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He is currently finishing work on the film, with their very first test screening next Tuesday night. Although we're now in the thick of the summer, Zack and Miri is one of a few movies that I'm constantly keeping my eye on and anxiously awaiting to get to once we finish the summer. Not everyone loves Kevin Smith, but I do love his films and I'm definitely looking forward to this one. He previously promised the first internet teaser trailer a few weeks ago, but it has been delayed until next week as well.

Yet Another Full Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer

On May 22nd, the world has many heroes, but there is only one… Indiana Jones! Another brand new, slightly different, full trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has debuted online. It only has a few minor changes compared to the other new trailer released last Saturday, however, if you're a true Indy fan or are anxiously awaiting this movie, it is definitely worth watching. Speculation is growing on what exactly happens in the movie, but I'd rather save that discussion for later… if at all possible. Anyone have any guesses why there is a creepy guy in a jail cell who has shown up in every recent trailer? And are you getting really excited for Indiana Jones' triumphant return yet?!

Oliver Stone's Bush Biopic Hitting Theaters Pre-Election!

Josh Brolin as George W. Bush

This whole movie is four years too late! Maybe W would have done a better job of showing America the idiot that we were about to elect back in 2004 instead of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. If this movie hit theaters back then, you probably wouldn't be complaining about the cost of gas, but that's all history now. You've seen the photos, read the details, now see the movie! Although Oliver Stone's biopic on George W. Bush won't start filming until next week in Shreveport, Louisiana, Lionsgate has picked up the rights and already set a release date - October 17th, 2008. You heard me right - they're releasing W just a few weeks before this year's big election!

Matt's Over / Under Column Discontinued

Running Scared

You should be seeing an Over / Under article here on Running Scared (pictured above) today. However, we have officially decided to discontinue Matt Goldberg's retrospective series indefinitely. Due primarily to numerous complaints and other internal decisions, we have decided that the Over / Under articles are not suited for FirstShowing.net and thus will no longer appear on the site. I know a lot of people were not too fond of Matt's writing anyway, but I want to make it clear that we truly appreciated his contributions and his opinion and it was simply an internal decision that we made for the betterment of the site and the consideration of our loyal readers.

Worth Watching - May 10: Josh Hartnett's August Trailer

August Trailer

The first real trailer for Austin Chick's latest directorial effort titled August has officially debuted. The film is about the 2001 dot com bubble burst. Remember all those websites that made it big then blew up and disappeared when all of that glory fell apart in late 2001? This movie is about one of them, Tom, played by Josh Hartnett, and his website called Landshark. This film really touches too close to home, but thankfully there isn't another bubble burst in sight and Hartnett's website was much more different than this one. Either way, I was quite entertained by this trailer and definitely want to check it out. Plus it's got David Bowie, who really needs to be in more movies - he always kicks ass. Thoughts?

Captain America's Shield Found in Iron Man?!

Captain America's Shield

You might have thought that all Marvel buzz was over as of last week with the announcement of their upcoming line-up - but guess again. I have confirmed myself, along with our comic book expert Roman Chavez, in person that Captain America's shield is actually in Iron Man. Yes, you heard me right, and if you need to go out and see it again this weekend I suggest you do. We'll provide the information on when and where it shows up below if you care to go find it, but we're pretty damn sure this is it. As for what this means for the Marvel universe and future movies - who knows? I thought Captain America wasn't around at this time and I thought he got his shield from S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Speed Racer

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? We're now officially two weeks into the summer and that means the competition is really heating up. The Wachowski Brothers are back for the first time since finishing The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. This time they're sharing with us another visually remarkable creation - Speed Racer. Did you sit back and enjoy it or struggle to appreciate it? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of Speed Racer.

Full Trailer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Trailer

I never would've imagined I'd be watching another Star Wars movie in theaters after Episode III, but alas, here we are again. The first full trailer for Star Wars: The Clone Wars has hit and it's actually pretty damn entertaining. When you combine a geek's love for Star Wars with some pretty slick CGI animation and the opportunity to see it on the glorious big screen, there is no way that most geeks won't be in love with this. Even I'm all for it, already anticipating the opening day in August. This new trailer looks incredible - lots of great action scenes and story and everything. The addition of Anakin's female padawan Ahsoka was one of the best moves anyone has made in recent years. Now I really can't wait for this to arrive! Star Wars is back baby!

V for Vendetta Director, James McTeigue, Takes on Revelation

James McTeigue

Seasoned sci-fi'er and upcoming director James McTeigue has signed on to helm a new thriller, titled Revelation. Judging from his directorial debut, V for Vendetta, and his involvement with the Matrix trilogy and last year's The Invasion, I have to say this is pretty happy news for a Friday. V for Vendetta is actually one of my all-time favorite films, so I'm excited at the prospect of such sensibilities carrying over. I'd be through the roof, however, if Hugo Weaving was involved.

Donnie Darko Getting an Unnecessary Sequel?!

Donnie Darko

When I wrote about the rumor of Matthew McConaughey being considered as Captain America a few days ago, I really thought there was nothing worse that I could ever report. I was wrong. Today we've come across some news courtesy of Screen Daily announcing the development of a sequel to Donnie Darko titled just S. Darko. Why is this so bad? The original films creator, Richard Kelly, is not involved in any way, shape, or form, and it's being developed entirely on its own by a completely new creative team. While I wouldn't have a minded a sequel if Kelly were to be doing it, this is a disaster in the making. There is really no way anything good can come of this! Right?!

Kevin's Review: The Fall - A Perplexing Descent into the Amazing

Kevin's Review: The Fall - A Perplexing Descent into the Amazing

There's a point in Tarsem Singh's second feature film where crippled, thirty-something Roy Walker asks five-year-old Alexandria, "Are you trying to save my soul?" Such a weighty question put to such a naive child makes for a truly confusing, yet beautiful scene - a sequence that speaks as much to the writer-director's talents as to his shortcomings in The Fall. The question is dim and tragic, fitting with the film's portrayal in the trailer. The Fall seemed a brilliantly dark children's tale of adventure, with visuals that would make National Geographic jealous. While the cinematography simply blows you away, much of the story grows into a much less stimulating experience.

Pirates' Gore Verbinski to Direct BioShock Movie!

BioShock

In a very exciting announcement today, Universal Pictures has officially signed on Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy director Gore Verbinski to direct and produce an adaptation of the video game BioShock. We've talked about it a lot before, including mention of Guillermo del Toro's interest, but now the movie has ended up in the hands of Gore himself. I can't even begin to tell you how overjoyed I am to hear this news! It is believed to be the biggest Hollywood deal for a video game movie since the Halo adaptation fell apart a few years ago. Be prepared to see the city of Rapture come to life soon enough. This is definitely going to be a defining moment for video game movies!

Start Your Engines - First Seven Minutes of Speed Racer!

Speed Racer

In one final desperate attempt to get everyone out of their seats and into theaters this weekend to see Speed Racer, Warner Brothers has released the entire uncut first seven minutes of the movie. Not only does this really introduce you to the colorful world that The Wachowski Brothers have dreamt up, but it really gives you just a small glimpse of the fun you'll have in theaters. I saw this for a third time last night at the midnight show with a bunch of friends and not a single one of them didn't like it. In fact, all of them absolutely loved this movie, even the ones who went in with low expectations. Do yourself a favor and go out and see Speed Racer this weekend - I really do believe most people will find it worthwhile entertainment.

Frank Miller Bringing Buck Rogers Back?

Buck Rogers

Although I've never actually seen anything with the character, Buck Rogers is a name that I'm inherently already familiar with. Buck is a fictional character who first appeared in 1928 as a venerable pilot who awakens in the 25th Century and battles evil. IGN initially broke the news that the classic character was getting a live action revamp from Nu Image/Millennium Films, the same company that revived Rambo and Conan. While it was later confirmed as unofficial news, their original report stated that Frank Miller was in considerations to direct - although officially the studio is still considering other directors, too. However, it was confirmed that a live action Buck Rogers revival is definitely in the works.
