Description of Restriction Categories
You can restrict the recipe search to recipes of a specific type. The
categories are:
- Vegan
- This will limit the recipe search only to those recipes that do
NOT contain milk or milk products, eggs or liquid egg substitutes, or
honey. If a recipe lists one of these ingredients but indicates that
it is optional or lists an *explicit* vegan substitute, it will still
qualify as vegan. A recipe listing "honey or other sweetener" will
not be considered vegan, while one listing "honey or maple syrup" or
"honey (optional)" will be. All recipes listing "soy cheese" are
considered lactovegetarian, since all of the low fat soy cheeses
contain casein, a milk protein. Recipes listing "egg substitutes" are
considered ovovegetarian unless an explicit vegan option is named
(such as EnerG powder or "powdered egg replacer"). Other than honey,
all sugars are considered
vegan for the purposes of this archive. As are all wines, beers, and
liquors.
- Nearly Vegan
- This will limit recipes to all vegan recipes (as defined above) as
well as recipes that contain honey but not milk or egg products.
- OvoVegetarian
- This will limit recipes to all vegan and nearly vegan recipes as
well as recipes that contain egg products but not milk products.
- LactoVegetarian
- This will limit recipes to all vegan and nearly vegan recipes as
well as recipes that contain milk products but not egg products.
- Any Vegetarian
- This will place no limits on the recipes -- all vegan, nearly
vegan, ovovegetarian, lactovegetarian, and recipes containing both egg
and milk products will be included. All recipes in the archive are
vegetarian.
Listing all recipes of a category
To list all vegan (or other category) recipes, leave the searchword
line blank ("*" will not work) and check the box of the category you
wish. Note that nearly 3/4 of the recipes are vegan, so the listing
will be long. You can do this for any restriction category except
"Any Vegetarian".
If you wish a listing of *all* recipes in the archive, you should use
the main recipe listing on the FATFREE home page rather than the
search function. If you feel you really must have a listing via the
search function of all the recipes, you can enter a dummy search such
as "not bkhweriswer". Not searches don't usually work, but for
nonsense words not found in any recipe, they do work.
How the restriction works:
All recipes contain one and only one of the following
keywords: kwvegan, kwhoney, kwovo, kwlacto, or kwovolacto. When you
specify a restriction category other than "Any vegetarian", the
following search string is added to your word search:
- Vegan: "and kwvegan"
- Nearly vegan: "and (kwvegan or kwhoney)"
- Ovovegetarian: "and (kwvegan or kwhoney or kwovo)"
- Lactovegetarian: "and (kwvegan or kwhoney or kwlacto)"
If you happen to find it useful, you can use these keywords in the
word search line. For instance, searching for the word "kwovolacto"
and checking the "Any vegetarian" box will bring up all recipes that
use both eggs and milk products.
