You can buy tempeh starter through Gold Mine Nutrition in Ft. Bragg,
California. They have a mail order business for all kinds of little spores
and fungi-type things that turn into food after fermenting. Ask for their
catalog.
I made tempeh a couple of times. A good incubation spot is on a rack
placed on top of my VCR with the power left on. Hey -- it works!!
