Couscous nightmate !

Recently I have been bored with eating plain old boiled rice with chilli,
dahl etc. I decided to get some couscous coz I've had it before at a
friends house and it was lovely. I cooked it according to the instructions
on the packet... soak 8oz in 14floz for 5 mins then cook for a further 3-5
mins on moderate heat. However, it all came out wrong. It was like a
sticky pudding and all the couscous has stuck together in a real mess.
What went wrong ?? Do you have to rinse it first or does it need more
water than recomended ? It was a nightmare, I could've wallpapered the
house with the stuff ! Any suggestions as to the art of cooking this stuff
and keeping it fluffy ?
